Missouri is set to receive $716,493 in restitution as part of a nationwide settlement with Skechers USA Inc.
The $40 million settlement - announced in May 2012 - with the federal government and 43 other states resolves allegations the footwear company deceptively advertised its Shape-ups toning shoes, according to a news release from Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster's office.
As part of the settlement, 9,666 Missouri consumers are eligible to receive an average restitution of $34. A court-appointed settlement administrator began mailing the checks July 12.
Skechers had been accused of making unfounded claims that its Shape-ups shoes would help consumers lose weight, burn calories, improve circulation, cut down cellulite and firm, tone or strengthen muscles. The settlement also prohibits Skechers from making health claims without adequate proof to do so.
“Consumers deserve accurate information about products they are purchasing, and we will continue to protect consumers by pursuing businesses that peddle false promises," Koster said in the release.
