In a ceremony lled with applause, amens and reminiscences, Benton Avenue Viaduct was rechristened the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge in ceremonies held Oct. 30.
The bridge is symbolic, said Mayor Tom Carlson. Originally it connected the separate and sometimes bitterly divided cities of Springeld and North Springeld.
Now, it connects north and south, it connects Jordan Valley Park's East Meadow and Central Green, and it symbolizes both the community's respect for King and a milestone in the community's ongoing ght for social justice, Carlson said.
