Springfield City Councilman Denny Whayne, the motivating force behind the renaming, recalls the vibrant black neighborhood and businesses that once thrived near the bridge: Rock Castle "where the Shipps grew up" City Hospital, the barber shop, Herbert V. Smith Funeral Home and Graham's Barbecue, to name a few. The sauce at Graham's was the best, Whayne says, and he and his friends used to get "barbecue sandwiches" barbecue sauce between two pieces of bread for 2 cents. |ret||ret||tab|
Whayne also remembers Graham's Tourist Cabins Springfield's only accommodation for blacks in the 40s and 50s built behind Graham's Barbecue. Famed musicians on tour enjoyed the hospitality of James and Zelma Graham, among them Pearl Bailey, Little Richard, Harry Belafonte, the Mills Brothers and Nat King Cole.|ret||ret||tab|
