Kentwood Hall joins African American Heritage Trail

Posted online

A former historic hotel near downtown has become the latest stop on the Springfield-Greene County African American Heritage Trail.

Trail organizers were joined Feb. 26 by city, county and higher education leaders to dedicate a marker at Kentwood Hall, formerly known as the Kentwood Arms Hotel.

The five-story hotel built in 1926, now a residence hall at Missouri State University, played a role in the desegregation of public accommodations in Springfield during the 1960s.

Located on Route 66, it hosted a range of notable guests including U.S. Presidents Harry S. Truman, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, plus Bob Hope, Groucho Marx, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II.

Other trail markers have been placed at Park Central Square, churches, schools, parks, businesses, and a cemetery.
