Kellogg’s sales fall as US consumers shun cereals and snacks

Posted online
Continued weak demand for cereals and snacks in the United States weighed on Kellogg Co (NYSE: K), the maker of Corn Flakes and Cheez-It crackers, which reported a bigger-than-expected drop in quarterly net sales on Tuesday.

The Battle Creek, Mich.-based company's total net sales declined for the eighth time in nine quarters. The figure dropped 8.5 percent to $3.3 billion.

Snack sales fell 1.5 percent during the quarter, while morning foods decreased by 2.6 percent.

The company’s shares were down 3.3 percent in premarket trading Tuesday. Through Monday, Kellogg’s shares have gained 8 percent in 2015, according to Reuters.

With American sales declining, the company is attempting to increase international snack sales through the acquisitions of Egyptian food companies Bisco Misr and Mass Food Group this year.
