General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) is scrapping plans to invest $245 million in a plant north of Detroit to support the production of smaller Cadillacs in favor of manufacturing the cars at its Fairfax facility in Kansas City, Kan., The Wall Street Journal reports.
The Kansas City, Kan., manufacturing center is a 3,200-worker factory that builds the Chevrolet Malibu sedan. A spokesperson for GM said the decision to bring the vehicle line to Kansas was made as part of the company’s efforts to produce the cars as cost-effectively as possible.
General Motors did not confirm the brand of vehicle it plans to build, but The Wall Street Journal cited people familiar with the project in reporting the company is looking to build a Cadillac luxury product designed to compete with other premium small cars.
