The Kansas City Council signed off on $1.63 billion in tax incentives for Cerner Corp.’s planned $4.3 billion campus on the site of the former Bannister Mall with a 10-1 vote on Oct. 10.
The 4.5 million-square-foot Cerner campus would be built during the next decade and include 11 office buildings and a 13,662 parking-space surface lot, according to the Kansas City Star. The redevelopment is expected to create 15,000 new jobs and generate $446 million in payments in lieu of taxes through the course of the 23-year tax-increment financing plan.
The mall, which had opened in 1980 at Interstate 435 and Bannister Road, closed in 2007 after years of declining interest from customers and retailers.
