Posted online

Kansas City, Kansas-based Harcros Chemicals Inc. is slated to pay a $1 million fine for the release of toxic chlorine gas in nearby Atchison.

The company pleaded guilty last week to violating the federal Clean Air Act in October 2016. Roughly 140 people sought medical attention after a Harcros driver mistakenly mixed sulfuric acid with sodium hypochlorite after delivering the product to a plant owned by MGP Ingredients Inc.

MGP also is expected to pay a $1 million fine for the gas release at the Atchison plant.
