KC-area jury awards $2.9M in malpractice case

A Johnson County, Kan., jury awarded $2.88 million to the family of Joel Burnette, who developed meningitis and a painful and crippling nerve condition in his spine following a steroid injection.

His parents contended the suffering their son endured as a result caused him to commit suicide in February 2013, according to the Kansas City Star.

The jury award against the PainCARE clinic and the doctor who performed the injection is the largest in a Johnson County malpractice case in more than 25 years.
