Kansas Legislature approves compromise to bring back Uber

Posted online
The Kansas Legislature yesterday approved a compromise to the “Uber bill,” a move officials say could bring the ride-hailing service back to Kansas by the end of the week.

The Kansas City Star reports an amendment to Senate Bill 117, which regulated private-driver services relating to insurance and driver background checks, defers to the company’s policies.

According to a conference committee report in the Kansas House of Representatives, the compromise removes language requiring criminal background checks by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and proof of comprehensive and collision insurance coverage for personal vehicles subject to a lien.

Uber has indicated that it will resume service once the new bill becomes law. The House voted 119-3 on the measure, and the Senate passed it a few hours later with a 37-0 vote. It now moves to the governor's desk.
