Kansas City's $18M streetcars on order

Last week, Kansas City Council approved a $17.9 million purchase order for four streetcars to run along a planned 2.2-mile, $102 million Main Street streetcar route.

The Kansas City Business Journal reports the Urbos 3 vehicles by CAF USA Inc. will be delivered in monthly installments beginning in at least 18 months, pushing the project back to fall 2015.

The funding is through the city’s $78 million special obligation bond, not from a recently approved Downtown Streetcar Transportation Development District. The TDD is tangled in a lawsuit challenging its constitutionality and holding up the issuance of $73.5 million bonds to help finance the streetcar line.
