The Kansas Board of Education is calling on the state's public schools to get rid of Native American-themed mascots within five years.
More than 20 schools in the state have mascots with names such as Indians, Braves or Red Raiders.
"We ought to be ashamed," said board member Deena Horst, recalling the use of the Indians mascot at Clearwater High School, where she graduated.
