A jury ordered Tesla to pay $137 million to a former employee who says he experienced racism while working for the company.
Owen Diaz, who is Black, alleged he was subjected to racial slurs by a supervisor and other colleagues when he worked at Tesla’s factory in Fremont, California, as an elevator operator for about a year in 2015 and 2016.
Roughly $130 million is for punitive damages.
