Judge: Kansas can ask voters for proof of citizenship in federal elections

On Wednesday, a federal judge ruled Kansas and Arizona could require voters to provide proof of citizenship in federal elections.

U.S. District Judge Eric Melgren ruled the federal government was wrong to limit what the states could require of prospective voters and ordered the Election Assistance Commission to change the federal voter registration form for Kansas and Arizona to include proof of citizenship.

The current federal form allows would-be voters to register even if they don’t have documents if they declare under penalty of perjury that they are U.S. citizens, according to the Kansas City Star.
