A federal judge on Monday blocked Penguin Random House's proposed $2.2 billion acquisition of rival publisher Simon & Schuster.
District Court Judge Florence Y. Pan wrote in her order that the U.S. Justice Department had shown the deal could "substantially ... lessen competition in the market."
A Penguin Random House spokesperson said "an expedited appeal" would be requested.
