Joplin student dead after accident at Irving Elementary

An 18-year-old Joplin High School student died yesterday after an accident in the gymnasium at Irving Elementary School.

Jasper County Coroner Rob Chappel told The Joplin Globe the death appeared "to be some kind of a crush incident with a basketball goal."

The student later was identified as Spencer Nicodemus. Joplin Police Capt. Rusty Rives told The Associated Press a basketball goal fell onto Nicodemus.
