On HBO's "Last Week Tonight," host John Oliver on Sunday forgave $15 million worth of student debt with the tap of a red button.
On the show, Oliver said he formed a company called Central Asset Recovery Professionals — or CARP, named after the bottom-feeding fish — and purchased $14.9 million worth of medical debt for just under $60,000.
Spending $50 to start the company, Oliver said the portfolio included the names, current addresses and Social Security numbers of about 9,000 people.
He completed the show by pushing a red button that triggered a rain show of dollar bills.
