U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, died Aug. 25 of brain cancer.
Known for his "maverick" style that often pitted him against his own party, McCain was re-elected to the Senate five times. He unsuccessfuly ran for president in 2008 against Barack Obama.
Prior to becoming a politician, McCain spent more than 20 years in the U.S. Navy. For nearly six of those years, he was imprisoned in a Vietnamese war camp, where he was brutally tortured and kept in solitary confinement.
