Ashcroft, who was born in Chicago but raised in Springfield, is a Yale graduate who began his public service career in 1973 as Missouri state auditor.
In 1984, he was elected governor of Missouri, a position he held until 1993. In 1994, he was elected to the Senate, where he served until 2001, when he became the 79th Attorney General of the United States, appointed by President Bush.
In 2005, Ashcroft founded The Ashcroft Group LLC, through which he serves as a lobbyist.
