Job openings tick down in September

Posted online
On the last business day in September, 4.7 million job openings were observed nationwide by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

That’s down from 4.9 million in August, according to a news release.

The BLS reports little change for private and government job openings in September, while decreases were seen in the arts, entertainment and recreation industries.

During September, employers hired 5 million people, up from 4.7 million in August and representing the highest level of hires since December 2007. Private employers - especially health care and social assistance - increased month to month, while government hiring was flat, according to the release.

Separations, which included those who quit, were laid off or discharged, totaled 4.8 million in September, an increase from 4.5 million in August. Separations were bumped up largely by private employers, the BLS said.
