Job growth stays strong but wages won't budge

Nearly 250,000 jobs were filled in September and the unemployment rate fell to 5.9 percent, its lowest rate since the summer of 2008. Revised employment numbers for August and July also showed stronger growth than originally reported.
 
The addition of more than 2.5 million jobs in the past year and continued job growth indicates the U.S. economy is strengthening, reports Bloomberg Businessweek. Job gains were highest in professional and business services, construction and state government.
 
Wages, however, have remained flat, gaining only 2 percent. Flat wages in a time of job growth indicates there are still more people looking for work than jobs available, which undermines employees' ability to ask for raises, the report states.
