Festivities begin tonight at 5 p.m., and an opening ceremony and parade follow at 6 p.m. at the garden at Nathanael Greene Park, 2400 S. Scenic Ave.
Tonight’s performances include the Abacus Club from Springfield’s sister city of Isesaki, Japan, which will demonstrate math problems using audience participation.
Volunteers also will lead tours of the garden, and attendees can exchange U.S. dollars for yen and purchase Japanese treats at the 100 Yen Store.
On Saturday and Sunday, the event lasts 11 a.m.—10 p.m.
Candlelight walks begin at dusk, tea ceremonies will be performed by the Miyama group with the Isesaki delegation and experts will give sword and martial arts demonstrations.
Performances will be by the Grace Puppet Group, The Garbonzos band and the St. Louis Osuwa Taiko Drummers.
Japanese souvenirs and food are available all weekend.
Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for children 12 and under and toddlers are free of charge. Proceeds go to the Springfield Sister City Association and to the garden to fund improvements.
The festival is presented by the Springfield Sister City Association and the Springfield-Greene County Park Board.
