Japan avoids recession

Japan's economy bounced back from a bad end to 2015 to avoid slipping into recession.

The country's economy grew by 1.7 percent in the first quarter, which is stronger than many economists were predicting.

Japanese lawmakers still face challenges. The economy of China - Japan's biggest trade partner - is slowing down, and Japanese businesses suffered disruption to their supply lines from a series of earthquakes in April. The yen also has rose against the dollar this year, hurting exports.
