A dedication program for the Jane A. Meyer Carillon at Southwest Missouri State University's Duane G. Meyer Library is slated to begin at 2:15 p.m. April 13 on the West Mall of the SMSU campus, according to an announcement from the school.
The carillon comprises 48 bronze bells, their cast-iron clappers and a keyboard, all of which were manufactured by Royal Eijsbouts in Asten, Netherlands.
The carillon's bells were funded by the Kenneth E. and Jane A. Meyer Foundation, and the carillon is named in honor of Jane Meyer, who died Feb. 1 following a long illness.
Kenneth and Jane Meyer are not related to former SMSU President Duane G. Meyer, for whom the library is named.
In November 1999, the SMSU Board of Governors voted to alter the Duane G. Meyer Library project renovation and expansion and make the distinctive tower planned for the building a carillon tower.
The board added $800,000 to the project budget to fund the tower, and the Meyer foundation paid for the bells.
Several speakers, including Kenneth Meyer, will be featured at the event, and the SMSU Pride Band and SMSU carillonist Jeremy Chesman will perform. The event is free and open to the public.
