An open house was held Jan. 10 for the new Fire Station No. 1 at 720 E. Grand St., according to a news release from the city of Springfield. Firefighters provided tours of the new facility and equipment.
Fire Station No. 1 is a 13,127-square-foot, two-story building made of block, brick and precast stone. Pellham Phillips Hagerman was the architect for the project and Rich Kramer Construction was the general contractor.
An 850-square-foot community room is located on the west side of the building, and it is equipped with multi-media, audio-visual equipment. The room is available for use by the public.
Relocation and construction of Fire Station No. 1, which was built at a cost of $1,332,000, was made possible by the level property tax approved by voters in the Aug. 3, 1999, election.
The city plans to retain the former Fire Station No. 1 at Kimbrough Avenue and East Trafficway for potential use by city departments.
