It's the economy, stupid: Why the stock market is nothing to worry about

No question about it: Wednesday was a wild day on Wall Street.
 
The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index saw some of its biggest losses since 2011; the Dow hit a six-month low. Blame the plunge on a shaky European economy and sluggish economic growth in Asia; 46 percent of the revenue of S&P 500 companies come from foreign sales, which could be threatened by overseas instability.
 
But Wall Street woes aren't expected to affect everyday Americans, states Bloomberg Businessweek. That's because exports make up only 14 percent of gross domestic product. Economists predict the U.S. economy to grow 3 percent through 2015. This, along with strong job growth, improving household finances and an increase in corporate investment "insulates" the U.S. economy from volatility abroad, Bloomberg reports.
