It’s Jeff Bezos vs. Elon Musk and Richard Branson – in space

A privately funded space race is breaking out between tech billionaires.

Tuesday, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos threw his hat in the ring with the announcement his Kent, Wash.-based company Blue Origin would expand to a location in Cape Canaveral, Fla.

Blue Origin faces competition from other hopefuls like Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk and Virgin Group founder Richard Branson, whose companies are already testing rockets and spacecraft.

According to Fortune, Blue Origin partnered with United Launch Alliance to develop a new rocket engine to be tested at the Florida site. Blue Origin completed test flights in April for a suborbital spacecraft from a company facility in Van Horn, Texas.
