It's all about small

The Sanyo 5300 is a flip phone with a color screen, a built-in digital camera with up to 16x zoom, voice-activated dialing for up to 30 names, and an electronic organizer with a calendar and a to-do list. Sunrise Communications sales manager Justin Abney said the new Sprint phone is "unreal." "You can text message your friend, send them a crystal-clear picture, and get on the wireless Web, too," Abney said. The Sanyo 5300 costs $399 plus a monthly contract fee.

"It's like having a little PC in your hand," said Melissa Finch, customer service manager of Office Depot's technology department , about the iPaq Pocket PC. Windows-based rather than running on Palm OS, the iPaq features pocket versions of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook Express. "You can actually create documents on your PDA and then transfer them to your computer later if you wanted to," Finch said. Capable of recording meetings or conversations and downloading to a desktop PC, the iPaq also acts as an MP3 player and features more memory. While the average Palm comes with either 8 MB or 16 MB, the iPaq comes with 64 MB. But the hottest feature on the iPaq is its Bluetooth Wireless Technology, which allows the user to beam Pocket PC documents directly into printers with Bluetooth capabilities, printing without a wire connection. The iPaq 5455 retails for about $698.

For executives who also are music lovers, Database Systems offers the Apple iPod MP3 player. Weighing in at about seven ounces, the iPod is available in 5GB, 10 GB or 20 GB models, with the 20 GB model storing about 4,000 songs. "It's extremely popular right now," said account executive Dan Maple. The iPods were included in the Grammy Awrad grab bags. Its rechargeable lithium polymer battery allows the iPod to play continuously for 10 hours and it features 20 minutes of skip protection. It includes headphones and the ability to connect to a Mac or PC. iPods start at $299.95.

Tired of juggling a cell phone, PDA and MP3 player? The Kyocera 7135 Smartphone combines these features and more. "Anything you want, this phone does," said Darin Gloe, sales representative at Russell Cellular. It features Palm OS 4.1 software, 16 MB onboard RAM and an expansion card slot, and it downloads from the Internet up to 10 times faster than most phones with its 3G technology. The Kyocera 7135 Smartphone weighs 6.6 ounces and costs $499 with a one-year contract, plus a monthly contract fee similar to most that come with a cell phone.

For one gadget that does it all, Advanced Wireless account executive Mike Harrison recommends the Blackberry 6510 with Nextel service. "Anything you can do in your office, or on a laptop, you can do with the Blackberry," Harrison said. The unit combines the calendar, address book, memo pad, task list and calculator features of a PDA with a digital cell phone. The user is always connected to the wireless Web with Nextel Online service, making it easy to access stored e-mail or Internet resources. It weighs less than 6 ounces and has 8 MB of memory. The Blackberry 6510 retails for $499.99 plus a monthly contract fee.
