It cost 1.5 cents to make a penny last year

In 2016, each U.S. penny created cost 1.5 cents to make.

That's about 50 percent more than its face value. Last year, it cost the U.S. Mint $46 million to issue pennies.

Last year marked the 11th straight where the cost of making a penny was higher than its face value.
