Island of 60,000 is $265B Treasuries haven

The Cayman Islands, with a population of roughly 60,000, has emerged as the third-largest foreign owner of U.S. government debt.
 
The Caymans hold $265 billion of U.S. debt, ranking behind China and Japan, which each hold more than $1 trillion.
 
The islands also are home to roughly 60 percent of the world’s hedge fund assets, according to a report by Oliver Wyman & Co.
 
The data released this week by the Department of the Treasury – the first time the government has released bond holdings among OPEC and Caribbean countries – is the result of a Freedom of Information Act request filed by Bloomberg.
