IRS suit prods BKD to release Cabela’s tax documents

The IRS has filed suit seeking to force BKD LLP to release its tax work documents for Cabela’s Inc. and its subsidiaries.

The federal agency is conducting an investigation into the federal tax liability for Cabela’s. Springfield-based BKD, the IRS says, isn't fully complying with a summons it issued Aug. 6.

BKD provided some documents but left out 137, saying they were protected by tax practitioner privileges.

The IRS contends the documents are not eligible for protection.

The agency is seeking to examine Cabela's federal tax liability for the years ended Jan. 2, 2010, Jan. 1, 2011, and Dec. 31, 2011.
