IRS says cyberattacks more extensive than previously reported

A hack of the IRS first reported in May was nearly three times as large as previously stated, the agency said Monday.

USA Today reports as many as 334,000 taxpayer accounts may have been accessed by hackers, above the initial estimate of 114,000.

Hackers entered the IRS' Get Transcript application, which allows users to view tax account transactions, line-by-line tax return information or wage and income reported to the IRS for a specific tax year.
