IRS Direct File will not be offered during the 2026 filing season, according to the Trump administration.
“It wasn’t used very much," said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who is also the current IRS commissioner. “And we think that the private sector can do a better job.”
IRS Direct File, which allows free tax filing, was used by nearly 300,000 taxpayers in the 2025 tax season.
