With it being deep in tax season, that also means the fraud business is booming. The IRS has released a list of "Dirty Dozen" tax scams that are currently circulating.
The list comprises phone scams, phishing, identity theft, return preparer fraud, offshore tax avoidance, inflated refund claims, fake charities, fake documents, abusive tax shelters, false income, excessive fuel credit claims and frivolous tax Arguments.
The penalties for these offenses range from a fine to jail time, according to USA Today.
The best way to avoid being a victim or being an offender is to start with a good tax preparer that can be trusted, according to the report.
