Insurance woes swamp residents after Northeast flooding

After the flooding in the Northeast brought on by Hurricane Ida, residents are now being hit with insurance-related financial losses.

The Associated Press reports many working-class families whose neighborhoods were among the hardest hit did not have flood insurance because they lived in areas outside of coastal floodplains.

In one neighborhood in Queens, for example, just 16 of 10,000 homes were protected by flood insurance, according to data from the Association of State Floodplain Managers.
