Indicted former Chesapeake Energy CEO dies

Posted online
One day after being indicted by a federal grand jury on a conspiracy charge, former Chesapeake Energy Corp. Aubrey McClendon died in a car crash.

McClendon, 56, yesterday was driving alone and quickly when his car "drove straight into" an overpass wall, according to the Oklahoma City Police Department.

"There was plenty of opportunity for him to correct and get back on the road but that did not happen," Captain Paco Balderrama of the Oklahoma City Police said at a news conference.

The 1989 founder of Chesapeake Energy was considered by some to be one of the leaders of the U.S. shale oil and natural gas revolution that has transformed the global energy landscape.

However, his 24-year reign was marred by controversy when he resigned amid legal scrutiny in 2013.

McClendon was indicted Tuesday for allegedly conspiring to rig bids to buy oil and natural gas leases in northwest Oklahoma.
