The Missouri city of Independence hopes to save $375,000 annually by closing its health department.
City Manager Zach Walker called the move a long-term financial sustainability decision.
Walker said many of the health department's duties are already done by other public or private providers. The city plans to focus on integrating essential public health services into other city functions.
