Impostor claiming to work for labor department calls employers

Posted online
The Missouri Labor Department is warning state employers about a scam where someone posing as a department employee is calling businesses and asking for confidential employee information.

According to a video posted on the department Web site, the caller claims to be an employee of the department's Division of Employment Security and and identifies himself as Kevin Adams but may have other aliases. He poses as a "senior benefit representative" and asks the company to contact him at a toll-free phone number.

A state news release said one victim has been reported. The victim received an e-mail from "modiveploy@worker.com" asking for employee information. According to the release, there is no employee with the department by that name, the department does not have a toll-free number for employers, and department e-mail addresses end in labor.mo.gov.

"We have contacted law enforcement, and we are doing everything in our power to track this individual and to stop this activity,” Labor Department Director Larry Rebman said in the release.

If contacted by this person or anyone else asking for confidential information, employers are asked to report the incident to DES at (573) 751-3328.[[In-content Ad]]
