Democrats on Wednesday cheered Speaker Paul Ryan plans to exit office as the surest sign yet they would take the House in November.
“It is the clearest sign that we’ve seen that the Democrats are going to win,” said Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Illinois. “I’ve been saying, ‘I don’t quite see the wave, but I’m starting to feel the mist.’ Now I’m starting to see the wave.”
Ryan told reporters, “I really don’t think a person’s race for Congress is going to hinge on whether Paul Ryan is speaker or not."
Ryan has served as the 54th House speaker since 2015.
