A math professor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale was indicted in federal court for alleged grant fraud.
Mingqing Xiao is accused of fraudulently obtaining a $151,099 grant from the National Science Foundation. He allegedly failed to disclose an existing grant from the Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong Province and did not disclose he was on the payroll of Shenzhen University in China, according to the indictment.
“We know that China exploits American universities to further the aims of the Chinese Communist Party,” said U.S. Attorney Steven Weinhoeft in a statement. “That’s one reason why the National Science Foundation requires applicants to disclose all sources of support."
