Posted online
Ikea’s Merriam, Kan., store on Tuesday officially plugged into its rooftop solar energy system, which comprises 2,394 panels spread over 92,000 square feet.

The largest solar project in Kansas, according to the retailer, the system is expected to produce 986,800 kilowatt hours of electricity annually at the store. According to the Kansas City Star, that's the equivalent of reducing 680 tons of carbon dioxide, equal to the emissions from 143 cars.

The 359,000-square-foot opened in September. Its solar project represents the 41st in the U.S. by the Swedish retailer.
