IBM agreed to purchase open-source software and technology distributor Red Hat in a deal valued at $34 billion.
Red Hat will become a unit of IBM's Hybrid Cloud division, with Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst joining IBM's senior management team.
If completed, the deal would be the largest transaction in IBM's history.
