People who have evacuated to the area but cannot care for their pets can leave them at the shelter.
The organization also is sending transport vehicles to affected areas to relieve overloaded animal shelters and bring pets to Springfield.
“We’re waiting to hear back from the Humane Society of the United States or one of the many other organizations to let us know where we’re needed, and we’ll go,” said John Derby, executive director for the southwest Missouri organization.
Pictures of unclaimed pets will be posted on here.
The organization will provide veterinary assistance to the animals, but area veterinarians are asked to donate their time, supplies or diagnostic services if possible.
The public can donate kitty litter, bleach or dry dog, cat, puppy or kitten food. Cash donations can be mailed to the organization’s other location, 3161 W. Norton Road, 65803, dropped off at either location or made by credit card over the phone at (417) 833-2526.
The shelter can hold between 50 and 75 dogs and cats, Derby said, but he’s asking the public and supply stores to donate or loan chain link dog kennels to provide additional shelter outside.
