The structure will house animal kennels, runs and intake areas, as well as a spay and neuter clinic and administrative offices, according to a news release from the organization.
The Humane Society’s current facilities – and the site of the new structure – are on 10 acres that were donated to the organization by Ruby S. Vella. The original building was constructed in 1960, with small additions through the years, as well as a satellite storage building.
The new facility will increase the shelter’s capacity by at least 38 percent with a maximum capacity of 385 animals, according to the release. In fiscal 2007 (May 2006–April 2007) the Southwest Missouri Humane Society provided shelter to 6,101 dogs and cats, adopting out 2,038 dogs and 1,463 cats, the release said.
