Posted online
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development this week awarded $865,457 in grants to Springfield nonprofits.

In total, the federal agency issued $1.6 billion in grants to fund 6,400 homeless housing and service programs in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to a news release.

The Kitchen Inc. received the bulk of the local funds, at $623,906.

Of that funding, $416,976 is for rapid rehousing programs; $143,983 is for permanent housing initiatives; and $62,947 is for The Kitchen’s Rare Breed youth homelessness program to provide nine housing units in the next year.

The Kitchen CEO Rorie Orgeron said in a separate release the funding would allow the nonprofit to “continue serving the chronic homeless population and families.”

The remaining local funding went to:
    •    Springfield’s Shelter Plus Care program, $147,977 for permanent housing and disability support services;
    •    Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri, $65,160 for its rapid rehousing program; and
    •    the city of Springfield, $28,414 to support homelessness planning.

Missouri nonprofits received $26.2 million of the HUD-issued grants.
