HSBC Bank Study: International activity pays off for Midwest companies

Posted online

In a study by New York-based HSBC Bank USA, Midwestern companies with a large amount of international sales were found to be three times more profitable than companies doing business exclusively within the U.S.

The Kansas City Business Journal reports that highly international Midwestern companies have an average profit margin of 9 percent, compared to the average 3 percent profit margin of other companies.

International companies didn't drop below 7 percent profit during the recent recession, whereas Midwestern companies with low international activity recorded losses before recovering in 2009.

Overall, Midwestern companies ranked second-highest for average profit margin and came in with the third-highest level of internationalization throughout the U.S.
