Following a disappointing tax season, H&R Block Inc. plans to lay off 250 employees, or nearly 13 percent of its workforce.
The Kansas City company said it handled 5.8 percent fewer U.S. tax returns during tax season.
“The volume losses are not acceptable and as CEO, I take complete responsibility for delivering stronger results,” CEO Bill Cobb said in a prepared statement. “You will see a very different H&R Block in fiscal year 2017.”
The company would have 1,735 full-time workers after the layoffs.
