The Missouri Department of Economic Development approved a $500,000 water grant through the Community Development Block Grant program for Howell County, according to a May 26 news release from the DED.
The grant will be used to pay for the construction of a new deep well and water storage tank.
“The CDBG program is an excellent tool for Missouri’s smaller communities and counties interested in improving their infrastructure and their economic viability,” said Department of Economic Development Director Kelvin L. Simmons. “Improving the quality of life for residents and businesses in Howell County with a new water system definitely can lead to economic opportunities down the road.”
An inspection by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources led to the conclusion that a second well was needed by the water district to adequately serve existing customers. A new deep well is planned, along with a 75,000-gallon standpipe for water storage and about 33 miles of lines.
Once all new equipment is installed, clean water will be available to 186 families. This will increase the customer base of the district to just under 500 customers.
In addition to the CDBG funds, the project will be supported by in-kind sources, local funds, a USDA Rural Development loan, and a grant from the Delta Regional Authority.
Another partner, Consulting and Grant Services LLC, prepared the application on behalf of Howell County.
The grant was made under the CDBG program administered by the DED. Funds will be released to Howell County as certain requirements set forth by the program are met. The program provides economic development grants and loan funds to cities with a population under 50,000 and counties under 200,000. Water and wastewater grants help fund construction related to water treatment and distribution, or sewer treatment and collection, for publicly owned systems.[[In-content Ad]]
