How much will KC's Smart City plan cost taxpayers?

Kansas City’s Smart City plans are moving forward, but how much taxpayers will have to pay is undetermined.

Fortune published an article on Jan. 26 examining the city’s partnership with the networking company Cisco Systems Inc. of San Jose, Calif. Fortune reported that the project could end up costing millions. Barcelona’s Smart City plan cost nearly $230 million in taxpayer money.

Cisco reported in January 2014 that the Barcelona plan saves the city an estimated $58 million a year on water services and had a $50 million annual increase in parking-fee revenue. The Smart City created 47,000 new jobs.

According to an article published in Kansas City Business Journal in early November, the Smart City plan “aims to transform downtown into a lab of connectivity through Wi-Fi and telecom sensors transmitting data on anything from traffic and pedestrian flow to the city’s infrastructure and public safety.”
