How a chemical used in rubber found its way into 500 food products

If the Pillsbury Doughboy seems particularly bouncy of late, it might be because he’s loaded with rubber.

A report by the nonprofit Environmental Working Group lists nearly 500 food items from 130 brands that contain azodicarbonamide (ADA), including well-known names like Pillsbury and Nature’s Own, according to Bloomberg Businessweek. ADA is used in rubber and plastic to make them lighter and more elastic.

Subway and Publix supermarkets have agreed to stop using ADA in their baked goods, which as been approved by the FDA for use in foodstuffs since 1962. Food science group Institute of Food Technologists points out that just because an additive is used in industrial applications doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad to eat.
